About the Journal

The Indian Journal of Adult Education (IJAE) is the flagship scholarly publication of the Indian Adult Education Association (IAEA), an organisation established in 1939 with a long-standing commitment to advancing adult education, continuing education, and lifelong learning across India. The journal itself has been in publication since 1939, and its archives, available on the official IAEA website, date back to 1941, making it one of the oldest continuously running academic journals in the field of adult and continuing education in India. Published bi-annually, it has served for decades as a platform through which academicians, practitioners, field workers, and policymakers exchange research findings, field experiences, and policy perspectives relevant to adult and non-formal education.

The journal is partially supported by the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), and it has been listed under UGC CARE, further affirming its academic credibility. It follows a structured double-blind peer-review process, maintains a defined and consistent publication frequency, and is supported by an editorial board comprising subject experts, academicians, and scholars drawn from both national and international institutions. The original research work published in the journal are also drawn from papers presented at the All India Adult Education Conference, held annually by the IAEA, which brings together academicians, practitioners, and scholars from across the country. The journal actively encourages academicians and scholars of adult education and lifelong learning, as well as the wider research community, to publish their work through this platform.

Aims and Scope

The Indian Journal of Adult Education is a scholarly journal dedicated to the advancement of knowledge in the field of adult education and lifelong learning. It publishes original research articles, theoretical analyses, review papers, policy discussions, and book reviews that address diverse dimensions of adult education and allied areas. The journal particularly focuses on themes such as adult literacy, continuing education, extension education, community development, vocational and skill-based learning, gender and education, and issues of equity and social inclusion. Contributions drawing from interdisciplinary perspectives within the social sciences and humanities are also encouraged.

The journal considers research addressing formal, non-formal, and informal learning processes, including the institutional and community frameworks within which adult education operates, and it promotes diversity in theoretical approaches, research methodologies, and scholarly traditions. Quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods studies are all welcomed, and comparative or cross-national research that situates Indian adult-education practice within a wider global discourse is particularly encouraged. Through this broad and evolving scope, the journal seeks to facilitate evidence based dialogue among academicians, practitioners, and policymakers engaged in adult education at both national and international levels.

Peer Review Process

All submissions undergo an initial screening by the Editor, followed by a double-blind peer-review process involving at least two expert reviewers. The reviewers assess the suitability, originality, and academic quality of the manuscript and provide detailed feedback. Authors are required to revise their manuscripts in accordance with the reviewers’ comments. The final decision regarding publication rests with the Editor.

Publication Frequency

The journal is published bi-annually, bringing out two issues each year.
