Amarnath Jha Library

Dr. Amarnath Jha (1897–1955) was a distinguished Indian scholar, educationist, and academic administrator. The son of renowned Sanskrit scholar Mahamahopadhyay Dr. Sir Ganganath Jha, he was widely regarded as one of the finest professors of English literature of his time. He headed the Department of English at the University of Allahabad and later served as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Allahabad and Banaras Hindu University, succeeding Dr. S. Radhakrishnan.

He also contributed to national and public institutions, serving as Vice-Chairman of the committee associated with the establishment of the National Defence Academy, and later as Chairman of the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission and Bihar Public Service Commission.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions, he was among the early recipients of the Padma Bhushan in 1954.  His legacy continues to be remembered for his contributions to scholarship, higher education, academic administration, and public service.

The IAEA Library has been named the “Dr. Amarnath Jha Library” in honour of his distinguished legacy and enduring contributions to scholarship, education, and intellectual development. Dr. Amarnath Jha served as the second President of the Indian Adult Education Association.
